Eliot Porter 1974
I recently traveled to Maine. Among the places I wanted to visit was Stonington. It is a small fishing town on Deer Island. My inspiration for going there were the photographs that Eliot Porter. One of his books is on Maine. We tried to get a place for a few nights there, but it is small and there are not many rooms. We were able to spend a day there. I walked around in my usual manner, looking and photographing things I think are revealing. Walking up one of the roads gave me views that seemed familiar. I remembered this photograph. No, I did not remember it in detail. Just the feeling of it. I took a few images on that road. Including the one here. When I returned home I got out the book and I found I had taken a nearly identical photograph. This one, unlike some of the others in the blog, was intentional. I like to compare how things have changed in the 46 years between images.
